It is a known fact that the NPS monitors this list, the LbNA site as
well as some individual letterboxers' webpages to find boxes that may
have been left on Park land. While most of us agree that we do no harm
and observe "leave no trace" ethics in our hobby. the Park Service
does not see it this way. Unlike the National Park service in Great
Britain our Rangers consider letterboxing a criminal act. I personally
know of two boxers who have recently been threatened with prosecution.
If you have placed boxes on NPS land, the clues should not be publicly
available. If you have found or know of boxes on NPS land, mention of
it on the Talk List is beyond inconsiderate. The idea of holding a
gathering on Park property is downright insane.

Or we could just respect their rules and regulations and find someplace else to hide the boxes. Some parks will give permission, otherwise... There are plenty of other places to choose from.

OK - I have to defend myself here. I happen to live on Mount Desert Island, which is home to Acadia National Park. It is not ALL National Park. There are plenty of lovely spots on this island and I have placed several letterboxes myself that are on public property. There is a great deal to this island other than the Park, and I am feeling a bit resentful to be attacked for simply inviting people to Mount Desert Island for a gathering. My reference to Acadia was for the benefit of those people who may not know that Acadia - a beautiful place to visit - is on Mount Desert Island, which has lots of beautiful, non-park areas for people to enjoy. As I watch posts on this list I don't usually respond, but it seems to me that people are awfully quick to assume the worst about others and to attack. Sad, when by and large this seems like such an enjoyable hobby. Perhaps those who attack should have all their facts straight before attacking. If I have offended anyone with this reply, I apologize, but to be accused of harming the sport or pushing another letterboxer out by a simple invitation offended me. 'Nuff said. My offer still stands. If there are those who would like to come to Mount Desert Island, I would be happy to help organize something. Within a few more weeks I expect to have planted several more boxes - with permission - so no one has to worry that I am breaking any laws.

I apologize for my note going directly to you. I thought I was posting to the list. Again, my apologies.

--Who says it's insane? Picnics and get-togethers in National Parks
are one of our rights. We the People provide for those parks.
Memli you go right ahead and have your fun wherever! Someday I'll
get back to Maine for a meeting. If it's in a National Park, all the
better!
Nwise1, this has all been hashed out before on the list. Go read
the archives. Get your facts straight before piping up!
Everything down here in DC is a National Park. It doesn't stop us
from meeting.

I can't speak for nwise but I think perhaps some folks have missed
perhaps the most important point of the post:
"I personally know of two boxers who have recently been threatened
with prosecution."
My take of the post was not that you shouldn't gather where ever you
want, but be careful, as the NPS is aggressively going after folks
planting letterboxes on NPS land. With this knowledge it would
certainly not be wise to have a gathering on NPS land if the
intention is that boxes will be planted there as part of the event.
Meet where you want, but don't plant on NPS land.

My offer still stands. If there are those who would like to come
to Mount Desert Island, I would be happy to help organize something.
Within a few more weeks I expect to have planted several more boxes -
...bringing the total number of boxes available for this event to six
or eight.
Call this the mother of all spoilers.
